Xbox Live's Major Nelson

How to use the water balloon picture as your dash background

I just loaded one of the water ballon pictures as my Xbox 360 dashboard background, and it looks pretty good, so I thought I'd go through the steps of you can to do it:

All you need to do is download the hi rez version of this photo, then put it on a USB memory stick. Pop it into your Xbox 360, and sign in with your profile. Once you sign in, go to the Media Blade, then to Pictures. Go to Portable Device (this is your USB memory stick) scroll to find the photo (you'll see a thumbnail) and when you have the photo highlighted, press X. That will make the photo your background on all blades as seen below. (You can not make a different image for each blade, only developers can do that with themes.)

Click the below image to see a full size version of what your dash will look like.

Note: I took this screen grab on my dev kit, so that is why 'Major Nelson' is a silver account and has no gamerscore.

LOL, I posted a commet just like this on Major's old site, however I think they should just enable it. There is no way I'm going to start to pay for each individual option in the dashbord. I have no problem paying a little extra for the "Halo 2 Multi player map pack". It was content that the Bungie team spent additional time to create, for us, after the game was released. Mech Assult 2's limited eddition, and it's "Extra Levels" that were created as part of the game, and copped off for an extra $15? Not allowing us to use muiltible pic's for our Dash so we buy themes?? Selling the "play and charge kit" at launch. But not the "Quick charge kit"? Everyone wanted the Quick charge kit, It charges up to 2 Batteries at once and fast. Now that everyone bought the only charge device on the market for the 360 during the entire launch (play an charge) they release that one. Now we can continue to use our "sort of wireless controllers" or shell out more money for what you wanted in the first place. They showed the thing everywhere, in all there videos leading up to launch but wait till now to release it. Petty cash grabs. tisk tisk.

Your screen grab from your dev kit does not have the unused bottons greyed out on the bottom of the blade.  My home box shows the unused buttons greyed out. (ex. B & Y on the pic he has)

Major,

I'd like to know the ideal image size for backgrounds in  the XBOX 360 Blades. If the maximum resolution of the 360 is 1920x1080, would the ideal blade image be about 1700x900? I know the size is a bit funky because it gets cropped to fit the shape of the blades. But what resolution does the 360 save background images as? The 'balloon' image was about 3 MB and probably 3000x2400 pixels in size. Does the 360 downsize it to 720p regardless of what your display is set at? And then if the display is set at 1080i, does it then upscan it just as it does for games? Please let us know so we can all create nice backgrounds for our blades... Thanks!

Ok, well could they add this feature in an auto update:

It gets distracting when you have a custom picture on the blades and whenever the blades move the picture slides along with it. could they add the option of have the picture in the back stay stationary or to slide with the blades. This could also fix the problem with the image being cropped to fit the blades... it would be much nicer i think. What do you guys think, let me know if you agree with this..

Is there any way to capture (via a seperate bit of kit or some sort of shortcut on the xbox) screengrabs of the dashboard and / or games to another computer?

You can buy a TV capture card and use it to capture either digital stills or video to your PC. I've got the AverTV Hybrid FM + Cardbus tuner on my laptop. It's freakin sweet and definitely worth buying if you wanna play your 360 on the go.

You don't need media centre or a usb key to do custom images. I've been using different desktop images that I have on my computer as my background on my 360 for a while. Some obviously work better than others given the way the interface overlays them, but I've got a really nice galaxy picture as a background right now that looks pretty sweet.
