Xbox Live's Major Nelson

Blogger Breakfast (Audio)

This is the audio from the Xbox Blogger breakfast held Wednesday March 7, 2007 at GDC in San Francisco, CA.
The breakfast featured Microsoft’s Chris Satchell (XNA) and Shane Kim (VP of MGS) who hosted the breakfast and fielded questions from the following attendees:

Michael Zenke: Slashdot
Chris Grant: Joystiq
Brian Crecente: Kotaku
Ryan Block: Engadget
Simon Carless: GameSetWatch
Spencer Yip: Siliconera
Adam Levine: GamerAndy
James Young: Evil Avatar
Richard Mitchell: Xbox 360 Fanboy
Chris Kohler and Susan Arendt: Game|Life (Wired)
Ron Workman and Robert Summa: Destructoid
Nick Suttner: G-pinions.com

Both John Porcaro (Gamerscore Blog) and I were also in the room as well, but we kept quiet so the others could ask their questions.

I did the best could with the audio, but it is a little noisy and as I did not have microphones for everyone.

People are really clanking their silverware during this breakfast, really distracting.

What Chris Satchell said is SO not ok:

"At some point we're going to focus less on it. When you get to the end of this year there will be a reduced focus on backwards compatibility. There are so many 360 games out there. I don't know if it's important anymore."

That had better include a good 60-70% of the games - and all the bigger titles.

So far less than half of my games from the Xbox work - including many of the best games for the platform (Panzer Dragoon Orta, Deus Ex: Invisible War, Outrun 2, Morrowind, original Burnout - hate the sequels, Rallisport 2, The Bard's Tale, Taito and Capcom collections, Chronicles of Riddick, Wreckless, Fahrenheit, Breakdown, Timespliters 2 - the list goes on).

I know BC doesn't matter to some people, but to a lot of people it matters a lot. I did not plan on keeping the black box around forever. I wasn't expecting perfect backwards compatibility, but 30% compatibility or so is taking the p*ss on customers. Yes I'm upset. It's bad enough that the emulator doesn't handle PAL games/that widescreen doesn't work without RGB / component cables (it should be entirely possible to work around), when it should be sufficient to have a VGA cable for a hi-def console. Yeah, I know Sony does it even worse but that's no excuse.

If the backwards compatibility stops here, I've bought my last Xbox branded gear. Yeah, it really does mean that much.

Yes, it's good that there are lots of great 360 games, but that doesn't mean I won't want to go back and play some of the older games.

Just a little extra: http://tinyurl.com/35tups

A link to this very site with "We're not sure where this came from, and is incorrect. At launch, Xbox 360 will be backward compatible with the top Xbox games. Our goal is to have every Xbox game work on Xbox 360. You will NOT need to purchase a new 'version' -- your original games will work on Xbox 360."

Frankly, I don't like it when people back down on their word *after* I pay them.

Is it just me or was Adam was pretty disrespectful with his first question? There is a polite way to ask when they think we will be seeing more of user created content. Also rolling your eyes at Chris' response is uncool.

These Microsoft executives don't have to invite you to breakfast. You should treat them with the same respect they treat you.

Can't be bothered to log in to comment. Just want to add that I'll try making games for my Xbox when I can do it on my Xbox. When it's as easy as going to the Games blade and selecting "Make a game". You can support USB keyboard and mouse for that. Maybe it should be something that is there from the beginning on the third Xbox console so everyone has it. When you're done making a game, you could hit the upload button, and there'll be a community area where you can download the top 10 user-created games, or the most recently uploaded ones, or search for one. Because I don't use Windows at the moment, so no XNA.
