Xbox Live's Major Nelson

What would you say to leaders of services at Microsoft ?

As you know, I work on the Xbox LIVE product team (the men and women that actually build and maintain the LIVE service) and I frequently talk to other parts of the company about their services and what they are building. From Windows Live Search, Expo, Hotmail, Spaces, Office Live, Frontbridge, and Live.com (to name a few) the company has quite the assortment of software + services.

Early next week I am attending a small internal meeting where many of the key service decision makers (like Ray Ozzie) from across the company are going to get together and have an open discussion about our service offerings, compare practices, and talk strategy. What do you think we don't 'get'? I know Google may be better in some areas, but what makes them better? What makes us not as good?

If you had ten minutes with the CTO of Microsoft, what kind of advice would you offer? What questions would you ask? During the two day meeting, I'll be sharing some of the comments here with the attendees to let them know what the community thinks of the companies offerings and strategy. So go ahead and be honest, I’m listening and I’ll share it with the right people next week.

Edit: Some folks missued the point here …thing BIGGER then Xbox or Xbox LIVE.

1. Google search engine is great because its clean quick and their homepage is straight to the point, MSN search pad their page will all sorts of crap you don't want, news, weather, etc.

2. MSN's whole look is very dated, the new live.com stuff looks ok but there is too much inconsistancy between MS services, everything looks different and you get the feeling of departments all working seperate and cut-off from the main MS group.

3. Google is all about user-input and user creation, Microsoft is all about static, pre-made content. Its like Google lets you draw on the walls, do what you want, MS tell you off, you're just meant to sit still and be quiet. Thats just my opinion anyway, make Microsoft products more about the user rather than showing off what you guys have done.

4. Licensing for Xbox Live materials. Bar the Video Marketplace, I think Microsoft should be focusing on getting the licenses for all countries before they release a download. For instance FIFA 08 demo, the USA got a demo before UK. UK are probably the biggest market for soccer games and because you made UK wait a few days extra for a demo, you basically said to them "we don't care about you, you can wait for the demo till we're good and ready", where as if you'd have just kept the demo until the UK was ready and released them all at once, no-one would be pissed and you guys wouldn't get any hassle for it, Its simple practices like this that win all customers without alienating others.

Thanks.

i think that the prices offered in the marketplace are ridiculous most of the time. and need to realize that most of the stuff left on the marketplace need to be made free.

I would honestly like the see Microsoft give more freedom to the community of gamers that like the crate within Microsoft-owned IPs. The recent announcement of machinima guidelines and rules have almost completely destroyed the possiblity of non-Rooster Teeth productions of Microsoft IPs and it really degenerates from the experience. In addition Microsoft doesn't allow would-be armchair developers in the community as much freedom as they should have. Major, while you are there, tell them that despite their position on being a community-oriented experience on Xbox Live, they really aren't living up to the statement.

Make more user-friendly online applications. I know Microsoft has all kinds of stuff going on to compete with Google in this field but it all seems targeted to businesspeople. On Google, I can make a web site, make a  document, presentation, or spreadsheet with no effort or navigating through services. Microsoft should offer some really simple, straightforward services like that that aren't business oriented. And don't have such long product names-I know you've said that before. But that is a big problem-like that online storage site that I can't remember the name of. If Google did that, they would probably call it something simple. And of course Vista, Office, and everything else have way too many versions, whereas Apple has "Mac OS X" and "iLife08," not Mac OS X Personal Home Deluxe or something.
