Xbox Live's Major Nelson

Reminder: Update your Friends of Friends setting

Tomorrow’s dashboard update will bring the ‘Friends of Friends’ feature to your Xbox 360’s friends list. This is a friendly reminder that if want to change the default settings of ‘Everyone’ (where anyone can see who is on your Xbox LIVE Friends list) then please take this time to visit Xbox.com to change the setting. If you want to keep the default, then you can just sit back and relax and wait for the update to hit tomorrow morning. After the update, you can change this setting as needed in your console or on Xbox.com.

Surely like the Facebook Beacon thing, there is a privacy issue, even though it is a list of friends and their friends, shouldn't this be opt-in rather than opt-out?

Or is it out-out so more people are using the feature by default without realising?

This sounds like a cool feature. I think what would make it infinitely more useful however, is the ability to assign a nickname to your friends so they can be more easily recognized. For instance, I have a bunch of people in my friends list that I know through other people, but I have no idea who is who because I never see them in the real world, and so I'm not sure if this player with the witty gamertag is my friends co-worker, or that fun guy we played halo with a couple weeks ago.

so wait.

Can people still se me through from other Friends of Friend?

So i set it on blocked.

Lets take example here:

Im friend of Player 1 and im on his friendlist.

Player 1 has set FOF to Everyone.

Now Player 2 happens to take a look at Player 2 friendlist.

Can player 2 see me there?

Because if yes,to avoid too many Friend Requests,i will probably spam my friendlist telling to make FOF blocked.

Allowing or disallowing people to see my friends list is one thing, but why can't I set whether or not I appear in other people's FoF list? What if I don't want anyone to just see my tag on people who I'm friends with? Do I need to start convincing all of these guys to change their setting to 'friends only'?

wait ozzie matt is an aussie? holy crap?!

this features all right and i agree with aussie matt we get stuck with awful lag playing international people. so any chance to minimise australian lag is a chance to take.

but i'm more interested in the bio stuff, i've been getting online less and less so that extra space in bio information will give the people who care the reason. 21 characters doesn't go far enough towards saying i'm busy with other stuff check it out at X.

you know major you could just turn it off for everyone? cause at the end of the day this is a utter crap feature and all its gonna do is create arguments between friends and allow spammers free reign.

Although to me this seems the lazy way out for microsoft xbox team. You refuse to make friends lists larger than 100 yet now you give me the ability to make a silver account and fill it with another load of people and then i can just access that friends list and BAM i have a 200 people friend list (or a clan list seein as you guys lied to us again)

Why not turn this feature off for everyone and then let people turn it on if they want to>? nobody will turn it off cause nobody will even realise that they can.

<boycot the dash update 2007!>
