This just in: The Xbox 360 HD DVD Player price has dropped from $179.99 to $129.99 (U.S. MSRP.) This new price is effective immediately in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Combine the new price with the 5 free HD DVD offer and it’s a pretty good deal.
hd-dvd dead? honestly i don't care. That's a good deal and what ever happens I'm buying the format that drops off. why? those dvd's will probably be discounted. So I'm picking up the player.
Got to love how many people come here to whinge, nobody cares about a single opinion.
HD-DVD is far from dead. It still has huge backers, and billions of dollars in support. It's here for the long haul.
best buy has it for 119.99 right now, hurry buy the dead format before it is gone!!
Any refunds for people that just paid the full price before Xmas, I got this & my wife paid £115 equal to $200+
Who's screwing who over?
Maybe something should be done like the original Xbox rebate, some freebies please
No, its not really a win/win. Its a win/loss.
You win now because the HD-DVD player is cheaper right now. Yes the HDDVD's will be on bargain around summer because thats when the major studios will become 100% Blu-ray who have not yet already turned over completely. Then after all the HDDVDs are gone, thats it. No more, nada, gone, etc. Then you have a HD DVD player that you wasted your money on and now the only left over HD format (Blu-ray) does not play on that HD DVD player. So I predict HD until the end of the year, also it wont last the same, the number of HD movies will drop through-out the year.
To add:
HD-DVD is not dead, support it & help it live, if the hardware is bought the movie companies will come back...
Blu-ray sucks (region coded for a start) & I'll never use it, I'd rather upscale my SD-DVD's on my 360's HD-DVD player than switch.
Don't believe what is being broadcast from Sony
I just got one for my game collection and accessories. It is nice to have a DVD in the HD DVD and a game in the system so I can switch back and forth. Still waiting on my free movies though.
If this had happened in December, I would've ran out of the office and bought one immediately. Today? Not so much. Blu-Ray is unfortunately winning the fight.
Translation: "Fire sale! All stock MUST go until there is no more! (to make way for the eventual BluRay player we're releasing)"
And that 5 free HD-DVDs offer... hmmmm that sounds a lot like a certain other HD offer I've heard of.
go ahead big will........enjoy having access to only certain movies in hd if you don't a blu ray player as well. as for me, i'm holding off any hd media player until one format is the clear winner. although i think hd dvd is dead, they still have exclusive support of universal, dreamworks and paramount (paramount and dreamworks will go the same way from what i understand) so the war is not over yet. also, warner is neutral until the end of may i believe, then its blu ray exclusive for them. all i want is for people to be informed before they make a bad purchase and they way major nelson is making this sound, they should know how bad hd dvd is really doing....
Best Buy is selling if for $120 so if you want it go get it there. I might get it just for the Bourne Movies and the 5 free. It pays itself off that way.
I don't see how it matters, in 2/3 years we'll all be downloading HD movies anyway.
To 360's, PC's PS3's and I'm sure there will be DVD devices that can play DVD's or download content.
Yeap too litle too late blu-ray is king!
Big Will 1982: you definitly must buy the Philips DCD and CDi then, pure quality! :-)
eh just bought mine in december... bummer... oh and ya i know blu-ray is winning just didn't feel like forking out 500bucks for hd at the time. i plan on investing in a ps3 as my blu-ray player later in the year.
5 HD movies = $125 to $175. Drive + 5 movies = $130... If you don't have it then get it, just for the 5 movies. Assuming of course you want at least a few of those movies.
Plus, when HD truly dies a lot of the discs will be dumped so you will be able to get movies on the cheap.
Interesting that in the US, the 5 Free HD-DVD offer expires on the 28th of this month.
Here in the UK, it has already expired.
You know what I find funny is that if Blu-Ray wins then we will all need to buy new players since the old players don't support version 1.1 of Blu-Ray standard. Now the players coming to the market support version 1.1 but not 2.0. The only player that support version 2 is the PS3 (has the hardware built in that is required for version 2.0) and a new model to be released from Panasonic by the end of the year. Just to stay current people will have to rebuy there Blu-Ray players if they want all the new fetures that are coming.
HD-DVD had all there requirements at the beginning and does not require new hardware when a new version comes out. So even if it looks like the Blu-Ray is going to win (we'll see) HD-DVD was the better format at the beginning and even now it still is. They are not updating there standards every 6 months. As for storage space Blu-Ray has HD-DVD there.
Don't buy into all this HD DVD/Blueray crap anyhow, all they want is for you to keep upgrading, upgrading, spend more money. If anything give it a few years and it will shake out like Betamax/VHS and there will only be one... then the prices of the actual disc will be reasonable.
HEY MS DROP AT LEAST 50 $ € FOR XBOX 360 !! YOU ARE LOOSING EUROPE OVER PS3!!! PS3 IS MAKEING 20.000 units more last weeks!!!
HERE (EUROPE) COSTS XBOX 360 PREMIUM (bundle)(349€ or 506 $)
AND CORE (279 € or 404 $)
THIS IS INSANE!!!!!!
If it was a Blu-Ray player for that price I'd agree it was a good deal. But HD-DVD with no future...no.
This seems like a good deal to me. What is the projected price point in New Zealand. None of the online stores I checked have altered the price as of yet. There are some great titles on HD-DVD, and if the format heads for death, they are going to become bargin bin product which is a win win as far as im concerned. I own a PS3 and have plenty of Blu-Ray movies for it, but I still won't hesitate to pick up a HD-DVD addon for my 360 if the price is right, regardless of the formats predicted future.
Hey Major,
When are we getting the Blu-Ray External player?
To all the people saying it's dead. Yeah? So what? Who cares? I have an HDDVD 360player right now and about 12 movies. If HDDVD ceased to be sold/produced TOMORROW, would I be ripped off? No. I wouldn't. I have my 12 movies that still play on the player. Those are still HD movies, so I don't have to rebuy them on Bluray when they are released. Most people that are complaining are stupidly thinking that they have to rebuy Bluray versions of their movies. YOU DONT HAVE TO.
All it means is that I have 12 LESS BluRay movies to buy. They're both good formats, who cares which one wins?
