Thanks for the memories Tivo

It's not that I don't love you...I do. It's just that we have grown apart. When we first met, you made me see the world in a new way. No longer was I tied to watching TV at a specific time. I could watch whatever TV I wanted to when I wanted to. You removed the chains or prime time and provided me the freedom to live my own life. You allowed me to live my life again, while still staying connected to my favorite shows. You let me watch the Janet Jackson ‘wardrobe malfunction’ time and time again. You let me watch SNL on Sunday afternoon. You changed my viewing habits forever.

But times are a changing. Your IR blasters often mis-fired and caused you to recorded “Oprah” when I wanted to record a James Bond movie. You said you were recording “Goldfinger” but instead I got an hour of screaming and squealing housewives. Your monthly cost has increased twice since we started together, that I can take…but here is the final straw: I find out you are going to start showing me ads when I fast forward? Sorry my friend, that’s not what I signed up for.

Finally, you can’t deal with HiDef TV. Sure your brother, DirecTivo, can deal with it…but I don’t want DirectTV. I want you to record HiDef programming and you can’t. So as much as I hate to do this, I need to tell you that it’s over. I picked up a Comcast HiDef PVR today:

It’s one box, smaller then you…and it has two tuners. It can record HiDef programming for me…and promises never to record “Oprah” again (thanks to the integrated tuner) Oh, and did I mention it’s cheaper then you Tivo?

So there…..that’s it. It’s been a fun four years but it’s time for us to part ways. We have grown together, as you learned what I liked and don't like....although we did not always agree on your suggestions (For the last time…I do NOT like American Idol) we did pretty well with each other.
But…I need more from my PVR, and as much as it hurts me to say this…when I get home tonight you'll get your last thumbs down as I retire you for good.
