Good show.

As for the Macbook, I have read no new of an updated Macbook. Maybe you read about the Mac Pro or w/e the replacement will be for the Powermac. There has been talk about that and the Core 2 Duo.

I have had my Macbook for 2 weeks now. I love it. Dual boot with XP for some occasional vacation gaming. Go for it Major!

Wow major just when I thought your aftershow couldn't get any lamer. If your going to say that about the PS3, look at the faults of your own rushed console. Still don't get why you are even releasing an external drive. Major, I hate to break it to you, but I don't think anyone from Sony will be CALLING YOU to be on your show. I think they just let you make an ass of yourself. Remember man, you are big in the world of videogames, relax Howard Stern.

re: Show #184 The one about game audio

They nailed the Audio in PGR3. AMAZING game to play in the dark with 5.1 (6.1 EX for me). It's the only way to play this game and one of the most overlooked titles for the 360.

I think it has the best audio (tied with CoD2) on the 360... No music, just ambient horror-type tracks and amazing sound effects.

It gets creepier everytime I play it.

re: Show #184 The one about game audio

Hi,

Just found your show and had to download all the past casts. Great job updating everyone, especially newbies like myself. HD RUMOR - I heard on NPR Market Report that there will be a HD/Blue Ray DVD Player coming out at the end of the year. The device will be able to play both versions. Have you heard anything on this rumor?
Thanks

re: Show #184 The one about game audio

Hey, Major. Just finished the show this morning, and LOVED the topic. Mr. Selfon hit the nail on the head on a number of different topics regarding audio, specifically how it's the unseen, though certainly not unheard, hero of gaming. It is, undoubtedly, true that smooth controls and sharp graphics are the first things people notice in the newest games, but sound is the factor that truly immerses a person into the game world.

The example I'd like to use specifically is GRAW. Ubisoft games hold a huge standard in the audio department, which I'm extremely thankful for. Sounds such as the subtle shaking of a character's gear, the clicking of the locks and hammers of the rifles, up to the deafening blast of a tank shell ripping over your head, everything is meticulously integrated to convince the player that they're in the middle of a warzone. Scott mentioned that repitition is the #1 death knell to game audio, and he was right. It's unnatural, and in the next generation of gaming, studios are going to have to focus as intently in their sound studios as they will on a visual standfront. EA is a company that realizes that, others should follow suit.

I have a pair of Bose surround sound speakers attached to my amp in my apartment that I frequently shake the floorboards with. I remember the first time I destroyed a vehicle during one of the early GRAW stages. The expected deep boom was equaled with an unfriendly shrill treble that made me squint from the ferocity of the explosion. I was automatically hooked to the game and kept the volume cranked throughout. I'll remember GRAW most for its sound and THAT is a hell of an accomplishment for the Ubi sound design team.

Keep up the killer work, Major.

re: Show #184 The one about game audio

Xboxer: I won't get into an endless debate with you on this, but I just need to rebutt just this once. Your whole argument for your actions makes no sense whatsoever. You state that people who don't have anything on-topic to post should not post at all, yet you post about people who post off-topic things. In either of your posts, you do not post ANYTHING that is relevant to the matter at hand and yet you feel the need to condemn those who do the same. Look it up in the dictionary, you're a hypocrite. In fact, here's a link: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/hypocrite

I guess I must have struck a nerve with my post considering your funny little name you gave me. LOL My, the Internet is full of wonderfully strange people.

PLease do have a good day, Xboxer. I shall not waste any more comment space to rebutt each and every post you make.

P.S. As far as audio, I'd say the Halo series and CoD2 for Xbox 360 are definitely games that have awesome sound. In fact, I think sound makes Halo more so than the story or gameplay.

re: Show #184 The one about game audio

I just rented Kameo and was impressed with some of the sound design on that game.
