All would hold true, if it wasnt for the fact that Movie Companies follow install base. And the PS3 selling out this year at it's launch will already have an install base higher than HDDVD being out right now. And more than likely will never catch up.

Not to mention Fox is soley supporting BR now. That is a huge sway when it comes to that. Since that includes Lucas Arts, and Peter jackson's company. Two of which do special effects in 90% of themovie industry. That is huge clouot.

As far as console sales. That would hold true if it were say, 1985, but if you watched and current demographic, you would know that the highest percentage of PS2/Xbox sales were from the age groups of 18-35. So the "child" isnt the system buyer anymore.

re: Blu-Ray and Gaming

First off, to those who made comments about Blu Ray's brand recognition beng upped by the PS3, and PS3 owners going to buy Blu Ray movies, you are wrong.
You WOULD be right, IF every movie was comming out on both formats.
But, say, Warner Brothers for example, will exclusively support HD-DVD. THe thing with DVD is it didn't really have a competitor. Things are different this time around, and the MOVIE STUDIOS and which popular movies are released on which format will drive the format war, not the game consoles.

And for the second, here is what will happen holiday season 06....
It will be another sunny day at EB games. A teenager will be sitting behind the counter, watching people come in. The first customer, a child, will move to the PS3 and point. Mommy will shake her head, eyeing the price tag and mature looking games, and point to the wallet and child friendly Wii.
Another will come in, a teenager, clutching his or her summer savings and their old PS2 to trade in (along with those old games), and eyeing the next gen gaming goodness. They will gasp at the PS3 price, not expecting such a steep entry fee. As they stand there wondering if they should wait until a price drop, they will spy a game- Assasin's Creed- sitting on the shelves, wearing both the PS3 and Xbox 360 colours. After examining them, they will find no graphical difference, and then as they look at the 360 display, their jaw will drop as Gears of War is on mind numbing display. They will walk away with an Xbox 360.
Next, the cash strapped collage studnet wanders in, and goes through exactly the same motions as the teenager, walking away with their Xbox 360. Next the parents looking for a Christmas present- and they will walk away with a 360 and or a Wii. Next the rich and well off folks meander in, and casually buy all three.

See the picture here? Most people will get a 360 this time around. The greatest help to Xbox 360 sales will be the launch of the PS3.

re: Blu-Ray and Gaming

"As a game console, it'll suffer from the BR trade-off IMO."

How will it suffer?

If anything it is an advantage with very low compression, and much more storage.

re: Blu-Ray and Gaming

While most people don't have HDTVs to really use the blu-ray player... yet, the drive itself for games isn't that impratical. Obviously it all comes down to console strategy.

The thing is that MS has always relied on compression for there games where Sony has not, hence why games like Xenosaga for the PS2 is 2 DVDs and games like Star Wars KOTOR are only 1 disc. But don't forget, when you use compresion you have to use power to uncompress these things which takes away from the dedicated power that can be used for the games. So while you have X stats for the 360, you technically are loosing a bit off the top of thoes specs due to decompression. Another thing that will not bee sen on the 360 is pre-rendered cinematics, due to the fact that there's not enough space on a disc for next gen information, and beautiful rendered cutscenes.

Sony's strategy is obviously to go for RAW power. They don't want to loose anything due to compression and what not, they want the system to read the disc and pump out a pretty picture. While this will make for an extra $50 on top of the equal 360 bundle you're not going to have to sacrifice rendered cutscenes or have to disc swap down the road.

In the end they are both justified strategies and it's going to depend on the games and the developers as to which one wins this war.
