Do I think microtransactions are bad? In some cases, yes. Others, no. Part of living in a free-market economy is that businesses are allowed to sell what they want, for whatever price they think they can get people to pay for it. Something's VALUE is only what others ARE WILLING TO PAY for it. Go to your local Wal-Mart or Target and take a walk down the Clearance aisle. You'll find a ton of stuff that people weren't willing to pay full price for, so it's been reduced. Same thing on XBLM - if you don't pay for it, prices might come down. Another point: No one forces you to buy anything. If you GRAW host chooses to purchase the expansion pack, you have a CHOICE as to whether you buy it as well or not. Does not purchasing the pack mean that you'll have to find another host? Probably, but you don't HAVE to buy it. If no one else in your group buys it, then your host won't have anyone to play with as well, so he'll be forced to go back to playing the standard maps. Point 3: Yes, many of us have "lives" outside of gaming and may or may not have the time to jump from gamer blog to gamer blog all the time, but consider this: Don't you do some sort of investigation before making any purchase? I mean, don't you read the back of the DVD to see what the movie's about (if you're not already informed?) Don't you read the spec sheet on the HDTV you're considering buying? Don't you talk to other people or read Consumer Reports before you plop down $20k+ for a new car? If you're unsure about what you're getting when you are making purchase and decide to make that purchase anyway (Again, CHOICE!) then you really can't complain about what you get. Take some responsibility, people, and stop blaming others for your choices (good, bad, or otherwise.) For the record, I bought Lumines (minus the Advanced Pack,) Bought a good chunk of the Oblivion content (didn't buy things that either a. wouldn't help my character (stat books when I'm already level 35+) or b. weren't appropriate for my character (like the hideout for vampires, when I don't play a vampire character.) But, I investigated what they were before I clicked that "download" option, and saved myself some money, as well as heartache. I mean, really. If you're a physician, would you go out and purchase an arc-welder if you had no idea what it was for, how to use it, or never read about it?

re: Major Nelson on G4 TV

I just read a neat suggestion, way above here, that Major should look into being the "special guest" on 1up Yours, which I wanted to second. Come the *** on, that game was awful. I guess that's the MS stance on gaming then, it's okay if the gameplay is horrible as long as there's A TON of horrible gameplay.
I don't want to hear that bullshit from someone in your position in the xbox community. You do realize that people who bought the game on the pc paid 10 bucks less than people who got it on the 360 don't you?
You people need to get your *** together because I'll come right out and say it, you haven't had a single game on par with the promises you were giving gamers at e3 before the system launched.
I got Lumines thinking "Wow, I loved meteos!" and because I have a life and don't go from game blog to game blog I had no idea that you guys were selling me an over priced demo. So I get and I think.. "Oh, wow, this is really cool. Wait... Oh, okay so this is like a demo and I need to get the advance pack so I can continue on in the puzzle mode." So I read the description and it says something about skins, I've played the game for 15 minutes I have no idea what a skin is, I spend the points and I'm treated to different music in the endless mode. Not puzzles or challenges. You need to tell who ever is in charge of putting content up on the market place that they need to police it so the consumer is 100% sure of what it is that they're buying, there shouldn't even be confusion because it makes your company look like they haven't a fucking clue what they're doing, which surprisingly isn't that far from the truth.
If gamers run xbox live then maybe they should be replaced with people who know how to run a premium service.

re: Major Nelson on G4 TV

The old money cheat code gave you $5,000, but you had to wait 5 minutes each time you used it.

That means, if you wanted to get the $400,000 that's now available for like three bucks, it would take 6 hours and 40 minutes the old way. Don't know about you, but if I wanted to get money I'd way rather just spend the three bucks. Would have been better to leave the old cheat in for those who wanted it, but this is getting blown way out of proportion.

Also, all the other stuff is new - and not pulled out of the old versions as some people are saying. (I've played both and there were no level 4 weapons, etc.) And the 360 version included a bunch of additions and improvements over the old versions.

So, buy this stuff if you want it - don't if you don't. The game companies will figure out what works in this new *Marketplace*.

Peace.

re: Major Nelson on G4 TV

i agree with bikeranger, it's also not choice when comapnies like EA purposly remove content from games then upload it on marketplace. (unless the choice is to not purches 360 games and get the xbox1 or ps2 version instead)

i will be wary about XBLA content from now on after lumines, isnt that damaging to the reputation to marketplace and the 360? MS need to start enforcing.

Not to diss you on your own blog, Major, but it is not a choice when the content is not described accurately.

Some folks ranting about Lumines are leaving out that the challenge mode can be played indefinitely. And I can understand that there's an experimental aspect to Lumines -- releasing a game like that on XBL.

But it's not the "Full Game." Whatever the game is, whatever the price is, the content HAS to be described accurately. There is no choice when there is bad information. There is no choice when I have to dig through game sites and blog posts to find out that Live content is not what it says it is.

From gamer pics with no way to see the pic before buying to misleadingly described arcade games to charging extra for content that's free in other platforms' versions -- Microsoft has to get a handle on Live. Experiments are fine (in fact they're great!), but if it's really about choice then accurate info has to be there first.

re: Major Nelson on G4 TV

Point of Clarification for J: EA is not responsible for GRAW. That would be Ubisoft.
