broken design: "Who needs HDMI?"

I DO. My TV doesn't support 1080p through component. Only HDMI.

MS already told all of us that there would be a HDMI cable for the original 360 when demand was there for it. Well guess what? It's there. I'd like my freaking cable please, Microsoft.

Oh another thing just found out its HDMI 1.2 in the Elite 360 so its got 1.2 and PS3 has the better 1.3 ok so there arent any HDTV's with 1.3 HDMI yet that means the deal is still pretty bad.

I dont want to compare hardware here but I think Microsoft are probably thinking to themselves 'Well we have the better games and more stuff, lets just price it less than the PS3 and it will still sell'.

Microsoft is only releasing the newer one to get a fresh new 'Buzz' in the market as the PS3 is latest buzz they want to stay on top so the only way to do that is bring something newer onto the market but still lacks the hardware against pricing.

If you are looking to buy a 360 then the Elite is the best value as its only $80 more for the 120gb however I prefer the white colour its fresh and new blacks been done before many times. HDMI is a little bonus but nothing amazing other than that its only worth it IF you are looking to buy a new console.

But if you are comparing it to the 20gb PS3 then well you have to ask yourself the question:

Does the PS3 have the GAMES I want to play? Also dont forget the online as well...The 360 dominates in the online and well in the games as well.

just a quick question about HDDVD play back, will the hdmi now carry Dolby HD and other HD format audio to an amp or is this just for video signal as i believe the optical cable will not carry HD audio?

Ugh. It's so unfortunate that MGS division is basically forced to overprice and make a nice margin on all '360 accessories because of the Xbox 1's hideous losses. I guess as an Xbox fan since November of 2001, I'm finally paying for all of that "borrowed" money.

Albert, sorry for "hemming and hawing", but, at the end of the day, everyone knows that the 120GB won't cost Microsoft anywhere near $180. You simply needn't dispute it. Anyone remember the 20GB? $100? At least we're moving toward getting our moneys' worth...

And to everyone who ever said that a console should come with an HDMI cable, well, my HDTV has only DVI, so that's a waste for me.

I just hope to hell that Gamestop will, as rumored, offer a discount on an Elite for trading in a Premium.

I would just like to say that i brought 2 Xbox 360's after reading an article that said that you don't need hdmi for hd gaming, but it also stated that xbox would release a hdmi CABLE when the market was ready so this was the reason i went and parted with my hard earnt cash (microsoft i would of waited). NO HDMI CABLE I FEEL LIKE IVE BEEN DONE THANKS

I have a Sony Bravia 1080P TV (Model KDL46V251L1) This TV has VGA but my 360 does not output 1080P through component or VGA. I had to pay 20 bucks extra for the VGA only to find out my 360 still does not output 1080P. My TV cost me $3300.00 and I want to know was the 360 Elite tested with current HD TV's on the market. I see no point in this Elite if there’s no 1080P content besides the add on HD DVD player. Especially if my TV does not work with 1080P my current 360. I wish you would have come out with this unit when I purchased my 360.

I just got a 360 Premium three months ago after waiting and waiting and thinking the HDMI/65-nanometer one wasn't coming (at least, soon).

When I wrote "$400 360 + $40 Wi-Fi + $200 HD-DVD = $640 360 equivelent to PS3, minus HDMI." I forgot to add my price for the 60gb HDD so that would mean that updating an existing 360 to match the high end ps3 would cost $740.

It would still be better than $100 for the Wi-Fi and $180 for a larger HDD equaling $880.

Looking at these #s though, it looks like the premium is less of a deal compared to the core. Buy a core at $300 + a $180 HDD = $480. Buy a premium at $400 + a $180 HDD = $580.

So the core only has a wired controller, big deal. Somethings wrong when the premium SKU is less of a deal compared to the Core, right?!

Man, MS could've kept everyone happy if they would've done a few things differently.

They could have added built in Wi-Fi into the Elite, put in a 60GB HDD instead 120 and priced it at $400.

Offer 3 different sized HDDs 20 $50, 60 $100 and 120 $150.

Remove the Premium SKU and just sell the Core (only give the core that nice chrome drive face). Let consumers pick which HDD they want when they purchase their console.

Then they could have Lowered the pricing on the Wi-Fi accessory $40.

This way you could buy the elite or update your current 360 and come in at about the same price as the $600 PS3.

$400 360 Elite (with built in Wi-Fi) + HD-DVD $200 = $600 360 equivelent to PS3 or $640 if Wi-Fi not built in.

$400 360 + $40 Wi-Fi + $200 HD-DVD = $640 360 equivelent to PS3, minus HDMI.

This wouldn't make everyone happy, some still want some sort of HDMI adapter or trade-in deal, but it would make more people happy than mad.

Isn't it obvious? Major Nelson and the other nice people at Microsoft are just chilling back looking at how many 360's have been sold and looking at all the Microsoft points we are buying *cheers* thats some expensive Champagne.

Now since Microsoft have decided on this sure we don't have to buy it but I am sure we all feel gutted or shafted I personally feel that anyone who buys an ELITE is gonna be very proud that they own the 'better version'.

Sure technology changes all the time like my HDTV has been replaced by a better model in a 6month time frame but thats a huge investment from the start for many people.

But with a games console it should only be about buying 1 model and it lasting until the next gen is out, the way I see it the only way Sony and Microsoft are going to compete in the future is who can offer the most ridiculous highly specced 'PC GAMES CONSOLE' that the other...

Actually it wont be too soon before games consoles become PC's...If it can surf the net and use a mouse and keyboard its a PC - thats the PS3 starting up already...That is something I DONT want from a games console.

I think from here on Games consoles legacy is going to become doomed and a thing of the past...cherish it whilst you can because next gen after this is gonna be a full on PC games console war.

I think there will be a market for the 20GB drives, just not a very big one. There will likely be a lot of Core System owners looking for an inexpensive upgrade... So getting something for the 20 will help offset the cost of the 120. Me? I hope I never "need" the 120, just like I don't "need" HDMI, at least not right now.
