Now that I have found the list again in my office move, I can finally share it: Title Artist 20th Century

re: BioShock Music list

yeye first comment

I agree with you in almost every respect. I think saying that exclusives are only important at launch is a bit narrow minded of a view. Lets take Sony for instance.

God of War 2 launched well after 1 and it was stil a huge game. The Ratchet and Clank games continue to be a huge draw on Sony systems. Halo 2 sold more than Halo one and it came 2-3 years after the first. 1st party exclusives tend to define a system as much as 3rd party exclusives...so you can't downplay the fact that MGS shrinking in size, with no real signs that MS has any intention of picking up developers in the wake. As I said I am a huge fan of the Xbox brand, and in order for it to continue to separate itself from Playstation rather than live in the shadow, there has to be more than just Xbox Live as the differentiator. I can count the number of real 1st party exclusives on the Xbox on one hand: Halo, Fable, PGR, and Forza. Other exclusives like Alan Wake, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Gears, etc seem to only be exclusive with respect to publishing rights but are not owned outright by MS, and could at some point find their way to rival machines.

Anyway I don't want to come off as a disgruntled fan or anything, I really do want to see Xbox be just as huge as PS and Nintendo, and that's why I am concerned.

re: BioShock Music list

Regarding lost exclusives - I'm not too worried about lost exclusives with regard to Bungie "leaving" or the Bioware deal.

These companies still have to abide by the contracts they have with Microsoft. In the case of Bungie, MS has a first look deal with them. Third party exclusives usually have a time period of exclusivity associated with them, as well as a "lock" on sequels or derivative works. These contracts can always be renegotiated but it wouldn't make sense for MS to lock in an exclusive title and not have first publishing rights (and exclusivity) for the sequels.

Also, I see this as a transition period for MS. Seems pretty recent that they acquired Lionhead. Maybe freeing up Bungie/Bizarre will make room for new acquisitions? Or a greater focus on promoting 3rd party.

I kind of think that exclusives make all the difference in the world when you're launching a console, but 3-5 years into the cycle, they're not as important. The key is building the customer base, and that's what MS has done. The bigger the customer base, then the more publishers and devs who will want to bring games to the 360 - after all, they just want to make a profit. Which also means that Sony is in a pretty bad position right now, with a lot of former Sony-exclusives making games for the 360. Their 1st party is still really strong, though - that's the only way they can keep the hope of the PS3 alive.

Just my opinion! :)

I dont care so much about 3rd party exclusives, but i do care about first party. That's one of the major things that differentiates a platform. With less internal development you have less 1st party titles, and then your system becomes less appealing then the other guy who has all the same 3rd party stuff and a bunch of 1st party exclusives.

@Strak

This isn't about Bungie, it's about Bioware and Pandemic. Bioware made some of the best RPG's the OG Xbox had. KOTOR and Jade Dragon. Everyone has kind of wondered why MS didn't pick them up already, and now they belong to EA so those exclusive RPGs are basically done except maybe the first installment of Mass Effect. I can understand the rationale behind the Bungie move though i don't like it at least from the outside. This however is not moving to independent developer, this is getting swallowed by a huge publisher which makes it that much more difficult to secure an exclusive from.

Would you really rather have had an unhappy dev make the next halo? or worse, have all the key talent at bungie walk out and then not have any of the spark that made halo great? honestly, it's good for bungie and it's good for ms. Bungie now gets to flex it's wings and since ms is still the main publisher it'll most likely churn out 360 and PC games.

I loved the music in Bioshock, seriously. I never figured that a game steeped in 40's era music or somewhere around then would be entertaining, but it truly was and was a stroke of genius on the part of 2K Games. Kudos.

Now the more pressing matter. When the Bungie news came up i couldn't believe it might be true because I couldn't understand how MGS could afford to lose developers in house when the stadium is looking thin. Now MGS has let another developer that has been great to the Xbox brand and the 360 just walk away. I don't anticipate that Major or anyone else that is an MS Talking Head will address this, but as someone who has been a huge fan of the Xbox brand since the beginning you are making it difficult to see the bright side of things. How am i supposed to be happy about this? All i see are lost exclusives or flat out lost titles. Can someone please make this seem better? And for crying out loud can one of you all please tell me when MGS might start to grow and acquire new studios and titles instead of letting things slide away? I know the goal is to become profitable, but how do you survive into the next generation without MGS exclusive games and studios??

I wanna believe Major, please help me BELIEVE!!
