The Surface table is an image recognition system (it senses the touching with an IR camera). This also means it can detect different symbols/patterns, like the underside of a WiFi-enabled device or RFID-chipped card (the unit I saw worked with a specific WiFi camera the lady had), or, as will be probably done in the future, a sort of circular bar code Microsoft created for this thing (could be in a glass or on the back of a Zune, for instance).

Damn, Surface is cool. So much potential. I wouldn't be surprised if in 10-20 years it's totally ubiquitous.

Would there be special chips in certain devices, probably exclusive to Microsoft, or some other way of interfacing?

All in all, it looks pretty damn cool. There's no denying that technology like this is going to be widespread in the near future. The interfacing is the coolest feature though, IMO.

re: Surface Demo (Boston area)

I have some buisness in that part of the city in the morning so i just might stop by and check out the demo.It sounds like it's going to be really interesting.

It definitely seems like it can do more than what the videos show (which btw are still cool), but nothing on there says "wow I must get this". If it progresses, this could be the next big invention, but if this is all it's gonna do...why are you bothering?

BTW, at first glance I thought this was that thing I saw on TV for Kitchen's of the Future with all that voice recognition, recipes, outlines for how far to stretch dough on your counter-top, etc. How's that coming along? And what's its name?
