Here is an official message from Marc Whitten ( Notwen ) GM of Xbox LIVE on where we are and what we are going to do. Again, thanks for your patience. How bout a year free instead of a little 4 dollar free game?!?!?

This lack of service on Xbox Live is utterly uncalled for. Can someone at least at Xbox get off their ass and type up something to tell the people that pay hard earn money for a service that only works when they (MS) wants it to work......tell the people that pay you whats going on....we are your boss...without us buying your Xbox live service....your games and all the other things you sell us...without us buying these things you're living on the streets.....

The update aside, does it really take two weeks to increase capacity? Is all of Xbox management jerking around at CES? What are people doing there? Crossing their fingers every time they "fix" things? "Hey, here's an idea ... if we don't do anything may be some of them will go away!".

It's a fee-for-service program like the phone company or cable TV. If those services are not working, I call and get a credit for the downtime. Try that instead of the silly free arcade game (pretty weak offer).

Providing regular updates on what's really wrong and what's being done to fix it would go a long way...

You are calculating assuming that the problem has only been around for barely 2 weeks. That is incorrect. Problems started happening the day of the December Update (Dec 4th). It has not worked right 100% of the time since then, so we are looking at over a month...so far...that it isn't working right. The problem still isn't fixed so I don't feel that we would be wrong in requesting the points instead of a game we already have or one we don't want. The longer the problem persists, the less valuable getting an Arcade Game seems. It will get to a point where they will have to start compensating on Xbox Live Subscriptions. Like, extend the subscription for a month or two at no extra cost, or knock 10 bucks off the renewal price.

Lets say they give us a game, that is 800 MS points, but its directed to the place they want it to go. But, they could give us those 800 MS points and let us spend it on a game of our choice, or a new Theme, some gamer pics, maybe some DLC for a different game we already own, etc..

re: Xbox LIVE Holiday Performance

Immediately after the message was released I was about to post an indignant comment with some of the same points that other people have since expressed so well.... what do I care about an arcade game I'll never play, I just want my multiplayer time back... maybe the service wasn't down system-wide, but for many people it was down and for many (most?) others it may not have been down but it sure was unusable (which is almost worse because you sit there waiting and wasting time)... this still isn't a real apology or offer of compensation (it's to celebrate live's success after all!).

At first I didn't post because I couldn't, because of the forum's hardware, software or whatever problems. Then I didn't because I thought it was pointless anyway. What else should I expect? Of course the marketing and PR spin machine is going to be in full overdrive on this. They can't afford to be completely upfront. Sure it would be refreshing for them to step up, but realistically that won't happen. Live is caught in a no-win situation. I know how these things work, to offer a more direct form of official compensation would be too much of an admission of massive service issues, would set too much of a precedent for next time, and would open themselves up too much to the competition and to critics. So far the live problems have been amazingly absent from mainstream media (in Canada at least, I did see the Sky News report though), so perhaps the strategy is working. I haven't listened to it myself yet, but I heard the podcast was much more upfront, which is encouraging. Maybe mainstream media don't listen to podcasts much yet.

I suppose the best we can hope for is that they'll take all the extra revenue from the new members and sink it directly into new infrastructure and better planning to support the growing member base. That's assuming the last 2 weeks haven't scared all the new people (and some old people) away already.
