But don't they have online gaming now for free (other than the hdd, that is)? Perhaps they meant the new additions they will offer are free, and gaming will stay the way it is now.

Ya I saw that a little while ago and wasn't to surprised. Sony can't run an online service without charging and I am really happy with paying 50 dollars a year to play. Did you also notice the chrome on the 649.99 CDN version of PS3 and no chrome on the 549.99 as well as the PS3 "Guide" button. Love It.

One of the latest PlayStation 3 rumors to make the rounds over the past couple of days was in regard to "free" online gameplay, or the apparent lack thereof. Even though Sony reps at both the Game Developers Conference and the E3 stated otherwise, due to the fact that Sony's E3 conference powerpoint presentation didn't explicitly state the fact, some sites jumped to conclusions. Well it just isn't true.

This morning, SCEA's PR Manager helped to clarify the situation. When asked to confirm whether playing games online via the PlayStation 3 would be free of charge, it was stated, plain and simply, "Please note that online gaming will be free right out of the box". There ya go.

Of course, like Square Enix did with Final Fantasy XI on the PS2, Xbox 360 and PC, a limited amount of publishers may still charge a fee for MMO-style titles.

Use constructive criticism and don't post useless comments about a man who gives up his free time to put together a very good website / blog and blogcasts. Actually, that was a fun read. Sure some of those fan boys don't like Major...but many of them AGREE w/ what Major has said. Not only that, but those guys have REALLY been abused by Sony. I forgot about all of the lies/half truths/misconceptions that many brought up in that thread.

To the folks that think I can't post what ever I want: You are wrong. I post what I want, when I want. No one. Not one single person decides what I post on my blog. I made this post to point out what I was thinking...remember that is the idea behind a blog: to post thoughts with a personal voice. Hopefully I'll be proven wrong, and Sony will provide everything for free. Regardless of what happens, competition is great for consumers!
